We are told over and over again how important it is to have a “good” credit score. But what is a credit score? As defined, it is a number that tells lenders your ability to repay a loan. In other words, your credit score measures your debts, how well you pay back your debts, how much debt you have and how long you’ve had debt.

Your credit score does not factor in how well you manage your money; how much money you have in savings, how much money you have put away for emergencies or how much money you are investing towards your retirement.

So if your credit score measures your debt; how do you know if you are making the best choices when it comes to your money?  Do you have healthy financial habits? Use the below money assessment tool, developed by NJAES of Rutgers University, to determine how well you are managing your money. There are only 20 questions and it will take just a few minutes to complete. Once completed tabulate your score and use the results to help guide you with future financial decisions. If you find areas in which you can improve, take action! It’s never too late to make a change.
